VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

CAMPSITE HOSTS—YANKEE BOY BASIN AREA

The Yankee Boy Conservation Association (YBCA) and the U.S. Forest Service announce Campsite Host Positions for the summer of 2006. Positions are available at Thistledown/Angel Creek Campsites and at Atlas Mill Site Campsite. These are on the road up to the Yankee Boy Basin area and Mt Sneffels from Ouray, CO.

Thistledown/Angel Creek Campsites are located 2 miles up County Road 361 from Ouray, CO, on a good gravel road. The Camp Host site is excellent for 35-40 foot RV's, as is the road. Hookups include 30-amp elecrical service, an on-site water tank to fill your tanks from, and pumpout service (truck comes to the site to pump your holding tank.)

There are about 30 sites and the Host site is by a mountain creek with beautiful views of peaks all around.

Atlas Mill site Campsite is 5 miles up County Road 361, below timberline near Yankee Boy Basin. This area is famous for its mountain beauty and wild flowers. This is the perfect place to spend 2 or more weeks in your camper or tent as the Host. No hookups at Atlas Mill Site. The road to here is 4wd. (2 miles beyond Thistledown it turns 4wd) At 10,500 feet this is a lovely high altitude campsite with a mountain stream and historic mining buildings in the heart of the Mt Sneffels range.

Below is a description of Jobs done by Hosts. Most of these take little time and are mainly checking on things. Your presence as a Host is the most important part. People feel welcome and enjoy their stay with you there. Many Campsite Hosts choose to also be Alpine Hosts during some days. This is a great way to welcome tourists to the area. (See Alpine Host Description below)

Campsite Host Job Description:

Welcome Campers.

Assist Campers as needed.

Check vacant campsites for litter and dispose of same.

Remove old registration receipt stubs from vacant site posts.

Check registration receipt stubs & remind campers who have no receipt or expired to please remember to register.

Perform minor needed repairs.

Report needed maintenance.

Check toilets, replace TP as necessary and pick up litter (Weekly cleaning is done by a Forest Service employee).

Order needed supplies from Forest Service.

Ranger replaces blank registration receipts @ the 3 campsites. If they get low, contact the Ranger.

Report problems/emergencies to Sheriff, Ranger, Fire Dept as necessary (see phone list)

Camp Hosts are needed from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. We prefer longer stays such as the whole summer or 1-2 months. Agreements are open to discussion. Above all we want our Hosts to be comfortable and happy in their volunteer work. During the high season (July and early August) we hope to have 2 Hosts in the Thistledown/Angel Creek area.

Camp Hosts will receive a free campsite for the duration of their contract. In addition, host RVs will have their waste tanks pumped. Host sites do not have electric, sewer, or water hook-ups. The Forest Service will provide an orientation session and a package of educational materials.

VOLUNTEER POSITION: ALPINE HOSTS -YANKEE BOY BASIN AREA

The Yankee Boy Conservation Association (YBCA) announces the opportunity to serve as Alpine Hosts in the Yankee Boy Basin – Canyon Creek – Imogene Pass area this summer. This is a “roving host” position where volunteers will act as a welcoming presence who assist guests in their enjoyment of the area while protecting it's fragile ecosystems. . It is important that volunteers have a vehicle which can navigate the 4WD roads up toward Yankee Boy Basin and Imogene Pass. Duties include:

•  Providing information about 4WD routes and hiking trails in the area

•  Ensuring that vehicles stay on prescribed routes and don't park on fragile vegetation

•  Making positive visitor contacts and providing information about human history, natural history, Leave-No-Trace and Tread Lightly ethics

•  Observing, recording, and reporting of maintenance needs

•  Completing light maintenance/resource protection tasks

•  Contacting Authorities in the case of medical emergency or other incident

•  Assisting with the maintenance of an alpine composting toilet facility

•  Having a working knowledge of Canyon Creek rules and basic Forest Service regulations

•  Informing visitors about the YBCA and it's mission

Hosts should enjoy meeting and helping people, be outgoing and friendly. Familiarity with map reading and ability to explain map features to visitors is important. In addition, hosts need to be prepared for, and comfortable with, the highly variable weather common to the San Juan Mountains. Good physical conditioning and ability to work comfortably at altitudes from 9-11,000 ft. is a must. Other skills/experiences which are desirable, but not necessary, include some first aid/CPR training and a background in the natural sciences.

We are looking for volunteers who will work one or several days during the summer. For instance a full week, one day a week for a month, etc. Free camping in Yankee Boy area will be provided for those who want to work consecutive days.

The volunteer season runs from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Hosts will receive an orientation packet in the mail 1 week prior to their service date. Magnetic “Alpine Host” signs for vehicles, volunteer vests, literature, and other useful materials will be provided.
